About

Not All Bonded Retainers Are the Same!

After orthodontic treatment, maintaining your beautiful results is essential! A bonded retainer placed behind the upper and lower front teeth (from canine to canine) helps keep your smile straight and stable.

However, not all bonded retainers are created equal and it’s important to understand your options! While they all serve the purpose of keeping your front teeth in position, there are key differences to consider:

🔹 Standard Bonded Retainers . These are simple metal wires applied behind the front teeth. While effective, they can feel bulky, uncomfortable against the tongue, and may accumulate tartar over time, increasing the risk of gingivitis.

🔹 Bespoke Bonded Retainers , Designed for enhanced comfort and aesthetics, these come in two options:

Entwined Wire Retainer – Made from multiple intertwined wires for greater resilience. Custom-crafted in a dental lab, it follows the exact contour of your teeth, making it smoother, more comfortable, and less noticeable.

Kevlar Fiber Retainer – A completely transparent, ultra-thin retainer that offers maximum comfort and aesthetics—virtually invisible!

Prices range from £250 to £650 per retainer.

About

Why Vacuum Retainers Matter After Orthodontics

After completing orthodontic treatment, the new smile needs protection. Vacuum-formed retainers (Essix retainers) play a key role in maintaining the beautiful, wide arch carefully achieved during treatment. Even when bonded retainers are placed behind the front teeth to keep them straight, vacuum retainers help preserve the full shape of the upper and lower arches, preventing unwanted tooth movement over time.

Dr Fern Jean-Joseph recommends wearing vacuum retainers every night for at least one year, then gradually reducing wear while keeping them as part of a long-term routine. This simple habit helps ensure the smile remains as stable and beautiful as the day active treatment is completed.
